Summer SportsKlosters is the ideal place for a large variety of summer sports (which you can of course enjoy in the spring and autumn as well!). |
There is an excellent childrens playground in the park with the sports center where you will also find the tennis courts and open-air heated swimming pool. Both tennis (1 hour per day) and swimming (unlimited) are free for guests at Klosters. The pool complex is very impressive. It has a toddlers pool, large pool with artificial current, a training pool, diving pool and a slide. It has a large grassy area so there is plenty of room for a quiet picnic with magnificant views. There is also a cafe, table-tennis and a childrens play area. |
Other local activities also include horse riding, lama-trekking, rock-climbing, paragliding, roller blading, sailing, swimming, tennis and wind-surfing. The friendly (English-speaking) people at the Tourist Information Office on Alte-Bahnhofstrasse will be happy to give you advice. For kayaking and white-water rafting there is superb white water nearby, grades IV to VI in Klosters (strictly for pros) or through the Vereina tunnel for grades I to VI on the river Inn. The easy rail access to the Engadine valley means that you can enjoy a day walking, biking or kayaking there and still be back for dinner in Klosters. The apartment is also very close to Klosters’ 9 hole golf course, which affords a wonderful golfing experience not least because of the magnificent setting (see section on golf). If on the other hand you don't want to spoil a good walk, our apartment really is the perfect place to be. It is literally metres from the hiking trail to Davos and trails in all directions are only a few minutes away. You can choose from gentle strolls to serious mountain hiking. The gentle strolls aren't confined to the valley as the Gotschna cable car is open in the summer and gives access to many easy trails with glorious views. |
For mountain bikers Klosters is an absolute paradise. The Swiss Bike Masters trail is 5 minutes away plus numerous others trails of different levels of difficulty in all directions up into the hills. You can take your bike up to the top of the Gotschna cable car for only 5.- CHF (on top of the price of your own ticket naturally) and free-wheel back down - its less than 4000 feet and not completely vertical. We chickened out of trying to bike down the home run from Schwarzseealp in favour of a track down to Wolfgang which was very steep and gravelly but we nevertheless survived more or less (pictures of biking to follow). Another option, if you don't want to do too much up-hill biking, is to take your bike on the train to Davos and cycle back again. The train fare for yourself is free (covered by the Klosters guest card) so you only have to pay for a ticket for you bike (9.20 CHF). The cycle track takes you through the woods but the last part down the gorge is marked with a "No cycling" sign... we tried it anyway and now we know why 8-). Personally I would recommend hiking up the river gorge to Davos and catching the train back again. By the way, the path to Davos runs right past the apartment. We also tried out the bike trail up to the Vereina mountain restaurant (Berghaus Vereina) which is a 700m climb over 13km. The middle section is pretty steep but altogether it took us thre hours with half an hour stop for a picnic on the way. The views at the top are certainly worth the effort (more photos to follow). The free-wheel back down takes less than an hour. If you can't manage the bike, or hike, you can still get to the Vereina Berghaus by mini-bus. You will need to reserve the day before at the Gotschna Sports shop which is just opposite the Tourist Information Office on Alte-Bahnhofstrasse. If you just want a leisurely ride you can follow the trail from Selfranga to Aueja and then on up to the source of the river Landquart. This is a lovely trail and affords views back down the valley to Klosters. You can come back on the northern side of the valley through the village of Monbiel and stop for refreshment, or just to prolong the moment, at the Restaurant Hohewald (closed Tuesdays). The apartment has a variety of maps
and guide books of walking and biking trails.
